_KulinaryaPoster_v2This Sunday, December 9, I have the distinct privilege of participating as a judge for the 3rd Annual Kulinarya Cooking Showdown at SOMArts Cultural Center in San Francisco, alongside Chef Arnold Eric Wong (E&O Asian Kitchen), Lynne Bennett (SF Chronicle), John Birdsall (CHOW.com) and Chef Francis Ang (Fifth Floor Restaurant).

Presented by the Philippine Department of Tourism, the showdown is a celebration of Philippine cuisine and features top Filipino American chefs from around the country. The event will also showcase dishes from various Filipino food trucks, food suppliers and restaurants, along with a holiday bazaar.

The competition features an amateur and professional division with “cheftestants” in each division battling it out with their own signature dishes. And the finalists are….

PROFESSIONAL DIVISION:

  • Jerrick Figueroa – Jerrick has worked at Saison, Wayfare Tavern, Plant Cafe and Cat Cora. His entree: Rambutan and Jackfruit Wrapped Escabeche.
  • Fernandina Lopez – Fernandina holds a Food & Nutrition degree from the University of Santo Tomas as well as Culinary Arts degree from the California School of Culinary Arts. Her entree: Kalderetang Manok.
  • Thomas Weibull – trained at Kristinaberg Restaurant & Hotel School in Sweden, Thomas has worked at One Market, Aqua, Rubicon and Plouf. His entree: Sous Vide Chicken Afritada

AMATEUR DIVISION:

  • Justin Hulog – a writer by trade, Justin is completing his MFA in Creative Writing at SF State. His entree: Foie Gras Sisig
  • Ross Tordecilla – although Ross has been in the Financial Services industry for almost two decade, his passion has always been in the culinary arts. His entree: Braised Beef Kaldereta
  • Joycelyn Vergara – currently a Group Billing Coordinator at the Westin St. Francis, Joycelyn absolutely loves cooking and traveling. Her entree: Braised Beef Kaldereta

Admission to the event is FREE and includes access to the food showcase, cooking competition and bazaar. To purchase food tasting coupons, visit Kulinarya on EventBrite.

Last week, I had the special privilege of participating in the first ever Silicon Valley Voice, an American Idol-style singing competition featuring tech boy band Coverflow (comprised of Ethan Beard, Tim Chang, Rajil Kapoor, Philip Kaplan, Prashan Fuloria and Kristian Segerstrale) and held at the world-famous Fillmore, where rock legends like the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd have once performed.

Presented by Silicon Valley Bank, proceeds from the event benefited several childrens’ charities including Bay Kids Bay Area, Make A Wish, and Little Kids Rock. The invitation only event was exclusive to members of the tech community, with a guest list that read like a Who’s Who of Silicon Valley, including judges Dave McClure,David Hornick, Steven Jang and Alison Murdock.

Of the 55+ contestants that applied to participate, seven finalists were selected including:

  • Andrew Chung – Partner, Khosla Ventures
  • Andy Barton – Tech Recruiter
  • Sara Oliver – Executive Assistant, Electronic Arts
  • Madhu Punjabi – Strategic Partner Development, Google
  • Ian Brown – VP Marketing, PagerDuty
  • Allen Mask – Product Specialist, Google

Now, performing on stage isn’t something new to me — in my spare time, I moonlight as lead singer for 80s Pop-Rock cover band, Honey Circuit. Participating in a singing competition, on the other hand, was something I’d only done one other time in my life, over twenty years ago.

In deciding on what song to sing, I opted to rock out and entertain, belting out a rendition of You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC. This was, after all, meant to be a fun, light-hearted event.

The Froomz team was out in full force, including Yan Heim (with husband Patrick), Courtney McQuade and Brad Lev, along with about a dozen friends, all of whom waved yellow pom-poms to cheer me on.

By the end of the evening, the organizers had raised over $23,537, with the grand prize winner, Sara Oliver, receiving a check for $3,000 for her favorite charity, Better Lives, which provides medical care in Sierra Leone.

Congratulations to Heidi Bianchi, Event Producer at SVB, for a job well done! For more information about Silicon Valley Voice, visit their website at SVB Voice.

Relationships based on trust and transparency are built to last longer. And we are proud to announce that Froomz has a 100% opt-in relationship with each venue featured on its website, underscoring and guaranteeing the accuracy of the details we provide.

Introducing Froomz 1.0“Many other venue marketplaces simply grab what they find online and post it on their site as if it’s exclusive information,” said Christina Dunham, VP of Marketing and Business Development at Froomz. “Often, venue managers are unaware that the listings are posted without their knowledge or authorization, making the integrity of the information compromised. We have a direct relationship with the venue itself so as not to mislead event planners. No guessing games here!”

For event planners, accuracy and quality of information are imperative, as much time can be spent on researching and contacting each individual venue. Pricing, availability, and specific features of each venue change regularly, thus it is critical to have up-to-date details. Froomz enables apples to apples comparisons without the time consuming email and phone tag.

“During a recent focus group discussion we led with local meeting and event planners, they mentioned how frustrating it was to find the perfect venue on online directories only to discover that the place had already gone out of business, or that the menus and banquet packages were from two years ago,” said Froomz CEO Yan Heim. “With Froomz, you can scan through all the available pricing packages, whether a simple room rental or food & beverage options, all of which are managed and updated by the venues themselves. If you are under time pressure, just choose an option and book it right at your fingertips. None of it is possible without the venue’s participation”.

Froomz Venue Growth - 2011-2012

Currently, Froomz features 359 meeting rooms, party venues and event spaces on its website, including the SS Jeremiah O’Brien, Julia Morgan Ballroom, Dogpatch Studios, and several art galleries in the SF Bay Area, with several hundreds more in the pipeline.
