February 10, 2013 marks the beginning of the Lunar New Year, ushering in the Year of the Snake, a symbol of power, fortune, strength and good luck. Observed by over 1.3 billion people around the world, Chinese New Year celebrations lasts for 15 days, culminating with the Lantern Festival.

In San Francisco, the celebrations last almost an entire month.  The Chinese New Year Parade and Festival, the largest of its kind in the world, kicks off with the Flower Market Fair and includes a 5K and 10K Chinatown Run,  Miss Chinatown beauty pageant, Basketball Jamboree, a Chinatown Community Street Fair, and finally, an elaborate 100-contingent parade down Market Street.
