Tell us a little bit about what you do:
Events by Collette is an all-inclusive planning company specializing in non-traditional events ranging from business launches to unique twists on conventional social affairs and weddings. Our experience ranges from Hollywood to international markets, managing everything from planning to design to advertising.
How did you get started in the event planning business?
Upon graduation with a MBA in International Business from Pepperdine University’s Graziadio School of Business and Management, no jobs were available with the 2008 downturn in the economy. Therefore I took a job as a server at a restaurant and climbed up the ladder with promotions and learned the business. I assisted in management for catering and event planning for Hollywood vendors and events while managing a restaurant in Los Angeles. With the experience, educational background, and my network, I began my own business with tremendous success.
What are your Top 5 Tips for Successful Event Planning?
- Have a Theme
- Know who your guests are and what they like or expect
- Estimate how much you want to spend
- Gain the interest and assistance of friends and family who are your best promoters and supporters
- Plan the date of the event wisely around holidays and vacations
What is your advice for anyone new entering the business?
Know everything about everything with the type of business you are starting. Do not expect to hire someone else to do anything else for you because of finances and only you know what you want and how to get it done correctly. For example, I do not bartend at my events, however I do have a bartender’s certification so I know how to create a pairing menu and can jump behind the bar if necessary.
